Wellness Counseling
Imbalance to In Balance
Find the space in your life. TM
Wellness is a multi-dimensional, holistic system with various categories affecting our lives, including Emotional, Spiritual, Occupational, Social, Intellectual, and Physical*. I would also add environmental, which includes the Environment we live and
work in, and the external environment (local and global) which also affects us.
Why should women, especially those in transition, focus on wellness? Women have complex lives. Mostly, they are caretakers of several people in their lives: children, elderly parents, disabled or ill relatives, sometimes spouses, along with working. Though men share in some domestic responsibilities outside their work, statistics show that women still carry most of domestic responsibilities. And because women, historically through the women's liberation movement in the last few decades, are working in jobs or their careers alongside these obligations, it can result in becoming out of balance, including physical illness, depression, frustration, anxiety, and discontent.
Wellness Counseling involves setting aside time in sessions, alongside therapy, to focus on achieving a better sense of general health and wellness in your life in any of the categories feeling out of balance. I will help you identify first, why you don't feel at your best and then, ways to implement aspects of wellness into your life. This may include ways to improve your sleep, learning how to have proper nutrition, looking at obstacles to getting yourself medical help if you're avoiding it or don't have time, and learning how to relax. Some people already have this baseline of health in their lives but want to go deeper, such as making a decision to incorporate yoga, meditation or some other contemplative or spiritual practice in your life. This is one of my specialty areas, and I can make referrals to nutritionists or recommendations for specific forms of practice that could help.
Relaxation Techniques - Techniques such as Breathwork, Visualization, Yoga, and Progressive Muscle Relaxation are offered within the therapy process, whether short- or long-term.
Sleep Hygiene - If you’re having trouble sleeping, your sleep will be assessed. If insomnia, you can find relief from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. For medical conditions, we can discuss referrals to a physician, including sleep clinics in the Boston area.
Mindfulness Meditation Group - A mindfulness meditation group is offered for 6 weeks at a time so you can learn how to meditate and create your own practice. Mindfulness, once learned, is a life-time skill that can help you manage stress, cultivate a calm and relaxed demeanor, boost creativity, and deepen your spiritual life...to name a few!
